What’s in a name?

What’s in a name?..well everything actually. Having the right name for your business can be critical in the recognition and growth of your business.

Here are some relevant things to take into consideration before doing the required checks.

Does it communicate well? Does it roll off the tongue easily or is it hard to say? Is it short and succinct or is it long winded and difficult to recall? Is it memorable?… by this I mean is it catchy? Does it breakthrough because it is creative or is it bland and unoriginal? and finally does it represent your service or industry clearly?

Once you have a list of possible directions there are a number of ways for checking ideas for your new business name. Domain searches, ASIC clearance and using Google Adwords to see how it ranks. Are you going interstate or overseas?… then checking trademark availability is also a very important factor.

Remember you do not need to say it all in the name. A strapline or catch phrase can be connected to the main name to explain what it is you do or sell… this sometimes helps when registering your business name. For example a client who has a BDM service came to us for a new business brand mark and the name of “Perth Business Development Services”. I suggested that this was probably already taken and was way too hard to remember, did not have enough market impact and was a mouthful to say… not only that, what was the email and web address going to look like! info@perthbusinessdevelopementservices.com.au. Would it even fit on a business card?… these are very real problems.

After much research and checking we came up with the solution of “OnPoint – Business Development” It is memorable, succinct, relevant, creative and a lot shorter in print form eg. info@onpointbd.com.au. Our client is happy, we are happy. Yet another successful naming exercise. So please be willing to research, explore and be creative when thinking of your new business name, it’s worth it!
